The staging system most often used for colorectal cancer is TNM.
In the TNM system:
The T refers to the size and extent of the main tumor. The main tumor is usually called the primary tumor.
T1, T2, T3, T4: Refers to the size and/or extent of the main tumor. The higher the number after the T, the larger the tumor or the more it has grown into nearby tissues.
The N refer to the number of nearby lymph nodes that have cancer.
N1, N2, N3: Refers to the number and location of lymph nodes that contain cancer. The higher the number after the N, the more lymph nodes that contain cancer.
The M refers to whether the cancer has metastasized. This means that the cancer has spread from the primary tumor to other parts of the body.
M0, M1: Cancer has not spread to other parts of the body.
Colorectal Cancer stages and treatment

Colorectal Cancer stage 0: Tis (Carcinoma in situ), N0 stage, M0 stage;
Treatment for colorectal cancer stage 0: Polypectomy during colonoscopy
Colorectal Cancer stage I:T1~T2, N0, M0 ——the cancer has grown through the mucosa into the submucosa.
Colorectal Cancer stage II: T3~T4, N0, M0 ——the cancer has grown into other nearby tissues or organs.
Colorectal Cancer stage III: any T, N1~N3, M0 —— the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes.
Colorectal Cancer stage IV: Any T stage, Any N stage, M1 —— the cancer has spread to distant organs.
