ANACLETO LABIS:My Prolonged Life*

I am ANACLETO LABIS, from Manila, Philippines. Before I retired, I was a bank manager. I loved my job and I had worked for 27 years. I was optimistic towards life but last year a medical report of gastroscopic biopsy brought me immense sadness.

I remembered one day in 2013, my excrement suddenly became black with blood. First, I thought it was due to the fast pace life and unhealthy living habits I had because I constantly smoked and sometimes drank alcohol. Thus, I stopped smoking and drinking wine but the condition did not improve. My wife suggested for me to have undergo check-up and examination at the hospital because my wife was also a doctor. I underwent gastroscopic biopsy and the doctor found out that there was a tumor in my stomach. I can’t accept this result so I went to another hospital, St. Luke’s, to take PET-CT. I also was diagnosed with stomach cancer. The doctors in the Philippine advised me to undergo surgery but I refused because I do not want to have my stomach removed. Thus, my families and I had to look for another suitable therapy.
Coincidentally, I learned about Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou through the Phil Star newspaper and I was impressed by its minimally invasive therapies. So I told my wife about it because my wife is a doctor and I believe she can give me professional advice. She suggested that I make a call and consult the Manila Office. The consultant in the Manila office, Dr. Lim, introduced the minimally invasive therapies in detail and he told me that if I undergo minimally invasive therapy, having only small trauma and is painless, I can avoid undergoing open surgery. What Dr. Lim said gave me confidence so I presented to him my medical reports and discussed with him about my condition. Dr. Lim found out that my tumor had already infiltrated to my lung. My wife and son prodded me to go to Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou to receive therapy thus I began my therapy at Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou with the hope to regain health.
Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou, lymphoma, interventional therapy
ANACLETO LABIS with Dr. Zhang.

So far I have received six cycles of therapies at Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou. My niece accompanied me on my first treatment at Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou and I came here alone for the rest of the treatment. I met many Filipino cancer patients here and we always share our stories of our battle with cancer. Though I am far away from my home during the treatment, I did not feel lonely because the medical staffs were friendly. I never thought I was a cancer patient here and I live happily everyday except when I had to lie on bed for 24 hours after interventional therapy. Usually, I do not need to lie on the bed all the time and I can usually manage on my own though I call my family at Manila everyday to tell them that I have been doing good in the hospital. I listened to music and watched TV for on my free time and if I needed any help, the nurses and interpreters were very happy to assist me.

I took a total of six cycles of interventional therapy and three cycles of immuno-therapy. The therapies I underwent were painless. The only painful experience I had was when the nurse gave me injections everyday but it was tolerable. Good mood helped me heal faster. After my every therapy, I was pleasantly surprised that my condition has been improving a lot. When the doctors told me that the infiltrated tumor in the lung was gone, I was thrilled. The next treatment would be to treat the tumor in my stomach. After the fourth therapy, not only was the pain gradually relieved but my physical condition was also better than before. My appetite was better and I also gained weight and my face was ruddy. I felt energetic and looked like a normal and healthy individual.

When I first came to Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou, I measured my life in days. After the sixth therapies, my condition has improved a lot. For a cancer patient at stage IV, this is indeed a miracle. In my difficult time, I accidentally knew about this hospital, which helped me avoid the pain of operation and trauma of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Without having any toxic side-effects, I regained my health. I believe only when we choose the suitable therapeutic regimen, have an optimistic outlook, have enough confidence, have faith and stick to the treatment to the end, there can be hope. Here, I share my experiences in my fight against cancer and I hope that through this every cancer patient can have renewed hope and also have themselves treated and regain their health. Enjoy your life!
